Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is believed to have sent an apology to his team-mates via WhatsApp after his negative comments about their talents (or lack of them) following last Saturday's defeat against Atletico Madrid.
Ronaldo took the rare step of talking to reporters after his side's 1-0 defeat at the Bernabau, which all-but ended their hopes of getting back into this season's La Liga title race.
Yet the former Manchester United superstar quickly regretted his decision to speak to the press after he hinted some of his team-mates were not at "his level", in comments that have sparked predictable annoyance among those at the end of his abuse.
Ronaldo criticised the performance of his team-mates and lamented the absence of injured players Gareth Bale, Marcelo, Pepe and Karim Benzema, after the latter of the quartet was forced off at half-time in the game against Atletico with a hip problem.
"I don't want to disrespect anyone, but when the best players aren't available it's harder to win. I like to play with Karim, with Bale, with Marcelo.
"I'm not saying the others like Lucas [Vazquez], Jese and [Mateo] Kovacic are not good players - they are very good players - but it's not the same."
Now it seems as if Ronaldo has issued an apology to those he offended by sending a group WhatsApp message in a bid to dampen down the upset he has caused.
El Mundo are reporting that Portuguese met with club captain Sergio Ramos to discuss how to limit the damage of his outburst, but it is hard to imagine his views have changed a whole lot in the last few days.
